A Malaysian Haunting

I was compelled to write this piece after watching the movie ‘An American Haunting’, which did have its scary moments. But more of a ’shock’ moment than anyting else. My perception of American ghost stories has changed after watching it. Before this, only Jap/Korea/Thai/Indon movies really did capture the emotion n thrill of experiencing the supernatural. Plus the depiction of ghosts in these Asian movies, is similar to the ghosts that most of us can relate to.

Little girls, woman with long hair, little baldy boy. All these are the ingredients of making an Asian horror movie that draws me in. n i must say after watching lotsa of horror movies, the scariest has to be ‘Darkwater’, especially the part where ‘Ikucha’ reveals herself inside the lift, going towards her ‘mommy’ all covered in slime n mud. i think my heart must have stopped for a few seconds watching the scene. coming in close second, is ‘Ju-On’ the original, n not the Sarah Michelle Gellar movie. the sound of the little kid is unbearable at times. then in 3rd place could well be to an American movie, ‘It’ by Stephen Hawkings, which strays a bit by having a clown as the ghost.

there is also a movie called ‘Entiti’, a compilation of ‘captured-on-tape’ showing acts of supernatural beings at work. it is where, ‘contestants’ were paid to sit down at haunted places all over Indonesia. those who ’survive’ the whole nite would win cash award. that is where they put in special cameras to record the contestant and their surroundings. some of them seems so real n authentic, some of them might be fake, while others are definitely fake without giving a second thought. i only remember vaguely of this movie. few scenes i still recall, especially at the tunnel, where a ghost appeared at the of the tunnel with the ‘contestant’ shouting "Mas, tolong mas!!!". there is also another part, where a guy was sitting in a kitchen, then ’sumting’ pass by the window n then stopped for a while n stares at him. i had trouble sleeping for few nites after watching it.

well actually, i dont have much of a first-hand experience dealing with ghosts. there was this one time, during one of my camping trips in primary school as a Pengakap boy, we went to some jungle i forgot where itis. it was at nite, but before that our teacher had warned us not to shine our torchlights to the top of the trees. so there was i wif a fren of mine, defying the warning. so we did flashed the light at the top of this 1 tree, n my god we saw the most reddish, burning eyes we could have ever seen. the figure was black so i cant tell exactly wat it was. we were speechless, n as an advise from old folks, we shud never talk about it, once we see it. so we just proceed back to camp, then only me n my fren started talking bout it. n he did saw exactly the same thing as i did. lucky it didnt follow us back or anyting like that.

then there is also this 1 nite at my old house in SS3. i think i was coming back from lepaking. it was quite late at nite. as usual, i park outside of our house. n as i was walking to the gate, i heard this noise of a child crying coming from the vacant house in front of our house. then i proceed cautiously to lock the gate n quickly get inside my house, without even taking a peek at the house. my frens did confirm hearing the same sound of a baby crying coming from that house also. this house has been vacant for quite some time. if ever there was a tenant, they wouldnt stay for long for some reason. but my neighbour’s experience is more horrifying. she saw first-hand a pontianak sitting on top of the tree inside the house 1 fateful nite, and have fallen sick for a couple of days.

wat can i say, ss3 is quite ‘keras’. u cud hear footsteps in the alley behind our house, dogs barking wildly in the middle of the nite n so forth. a neighbour was also found crying while playing the swing after the maghrib call for prayer. he said he saw sumting n he was possessed for a while after that. then there was also dedee’s house story. where suddenly there was a blackout in the house, then the noise of ‘batu lesung’ hammering away coming from the store of the house. then he did mention like he was using his PC wif the windows n wif the curtains closed, but then the next thing he knew, the window n curtain was wide open.

we also tried our luck by visiting some famous sites of sightings of these ghostly spirits all around Klang Valley. last time the favorite spot was a house on top of Kenny Hill aka Bukit Tunku near the Pengasih house, but then it was closed down. there was also the Frenzy’s House in Ulu Klang near the zoo there. then there was the remains of the collapsed of the infamous Highland Towers, Krayong cemetery near Mid Valley, Botak Chin’s house in Seksyen 16, White House in Shah Alam, abandoned hostel near Jalan Semarak and a few others which i cant recall. but each time we went, we returned empty except for the thrill of visiting these places n the occasional sweat n the ‘meremang bulu roma’. im sure if indeed we saw sumting, then it will probably bring us to the next level of excitement n thrill-seeking.

but thank god also, we did not see anyting of it. actually there had always been another plane of existence, which is called the ‘alam ghaib’. only certain people was blessed or rather cursed, that they could see the other plane. so lets just keep it that way. hope we all can live in peace n harmony n do not disturb each other in this life or after. amen…
